While discussing options for Improving language and socio-economic diversity the idea of having simultaneous interpretation for the next monthly meeting (October 14th) was suggested. I’ll try to find someone translating French to English. Both @pilou and myself are native French speakers and we would only speak French.
I participate in a EU funded software project[0] involving participants that are not necessarily native English speakers. Would it be possible to get a quote for a one hour simultaneous translation (French to English only) during a videoconference?
Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, we are a junior company run by students and there is currently no native English student among us who could take on this mission.
However, don’t hesitate to call on us for future interpretation or translation projects. For information, our basic rate is €15/hour for interpreting, €0.10/word for translation into French and €0.13/word for translation into a language other than French.

I commented here. I suggest to invite someone - otherwise there will only be three attendees: you, the translator and me. In order to improve the diversity and to avoid any contrived situation, I suggest to invite someone who doesn’t speak English/French.

Bonjour,
Update: he did not show up at the meeting. I waited 5 minutes, which is not much. But it’s too much when it comes to live translation of a videoconference.

@pilou will you be available one hour before the meeting? Alexandra agreed to be present for the purpose of testing the technical configuration. She is used to simultaneous translation with other videoconferencing systems but not with Jitsi.
And also… we should spread the word so that there is at least one more non-French speaking person attending the meeting

Bonjour,

The conclusions of the experiment are globally positive and it will be repeated for the next monthly update. Since I was the one speaking in French and I’m comfortable speaking English, it was not for real. But the next update will be. The following need work:
Participants must be warned to not listen to the translation, even though they understand it. Otherwise it is sequential and not simultaneous.
Participants must speak slowly.
A 15 minutes session must be organized with the translator and the person being translated, to get use to it.
Technical terms are an issue and lead to confusing translation. The participants must be reminded to use as few as possible.
Simultaneous interpretation was proposed during the January 2022 webinar. It was well prepared and the interpreters delivered a good translation but it was not useful in the end because:
Only one question was asked in French and another in Chinese
There were around 25 participants and their volume was not tuned in advance so the sound overlapped and the translation was difficult to understand
These problems must be addressed before trying again in a webinar. The next event, in February, will be a videoconference with just a few people (around 5) and more French & Chinese speaking time. The same setup should be much more useful.
