On LWN, this article speak of the current efforts to interface the email based workflow of the Linux kernel with something like github.

The current plan is to convert the PR into a email with a bot. I think the whole topic can be of interest to the people here (article is currently paywalled, but should be free tomorrow or the day after)

On the same idea, there is https://gitgitgadget.github.io/ , which is a way to use github to trigger mail patches for git project. So using github as a frontend for a project whose workflow is not using github. The same could be done for others forges.
